Downtown Seattle, Amazon Spheres, Listening Tree
Downtown Seattle Amazon Spheres Commission. Listening Tree. 2018. Pine, polyurethane, wax. 6'x 5' x4'.
The Listening Tree is an interactive artwork in The Understory of the Spheres in Downtown Seattle's Amazon headquarter's campus.
The Listening Tree is a six foot tall interactive artwork constructed with pine. I designed a friendly and whimsical Tree encouraging interaction and exploration, with leaves that can be cut out and hung along its branches. I conceptualized a manufactured piece of nature, and as such I carefully considered the space that it would exist in. The Listening Tree is not representational but rather stylized to exist as a designed object. Stylistic elements include, the slight curve of the trunk, the rounded ends of the limbs, and detailing around the surface of the tree, speaking to the long history of wood craft. The pine is finished to a smooth satin with polyurethane and sealed with wax, enhancing the warm glow of the pine’s natural hues. The Listening Tree is an opportunity to explore both traditional craftsmanship and contribute to a conversation.
